Hakim is a human Fable who used to be a slave of Sinbad, until he was set free and settled down in Fabletown. He first appears in Fables #42 — "Arabian Nights (and Days), Chapter One: Broken English."
History
Life in Fabletown
Hakim is a slave of Sinbad, who comes with his master to Fabletown,[1] where he attains his freedom after Sinbad consents to Fabletown's demand to liberate all of his slaves.[4] All of the former slaves are given the choice of accompanying Sinbad back to Baghdad, or remain in New York City as newly emancipated citizens of Fabletown. When Hakim chooses to stay, Deputy Mayor Beauty and Sheriff Beast set out to help him find a job and an apartment, however, they must rely on a dictionary for communication, since he only speaks Arabic.[4]
Soon enough, he gains sufficient proficiency in English to communicate with ease and takes up residence in one of Fabletown's apartments. When Beauty explains that Hakim needs to find a job to pay the rent, he offers his services as an assassin to Fabletown, but Beauty clarifies that Fabletown does not engage in such activities, and sets out to find him a more appropriate position. Initially, he is assigned the role of bookstore attendant at Nod's Books, but Hakim has trouble adjusting to modern-day New York and his aggressive demeanor frightens the customers, which is attributed to a culture clash.[3] He subsequently secures employment as a sales clerk at The Glass Slipper Shoes, but inadvertently offends one of the customers there,[3] and even attempts to kill some of them.[5] Beauty finally lands him a job at the Web 'n' Muffet Market, as a delivery person.[3]
He later attends Snow White and Bigby's wedding in Wolf Valley.[6]
Fabletown-Imperial war
Hakim becomes the bodyguard to Briar Rose when she agrees to use her sleeping curse to disable the Empire's capital city.[7] He and her magical guardian Mrs. Someone ultimately choose to stay by Briar Rose's side and go to sleep with her, to assure that she remains protected with sword and spell until the end.[8]
Years later, the sleeping Briar Rose is carried out of the city by goblins, who proceed to burn the entire city to the ground.[2] Even though Hakim's fate is left unseen, he and Mrs. Someone are most likely killed in the fire.
