| ― Mersey Dotes to the fishwife, Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall — "What You Wish For" |
Mersey Dotes is a human Fable turned mermaid who resides at the Farm and first appears in Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall — "What You Wish For."
History
Background
Mersey Dotes was a human girl who loved to explore new lands, but one day, she found that she had run out of lands to explore. A fisherman suggested that his wife may be able to solve her problem. The fishwife was able to turn her into a mermaid, and Mersey was able to explore the ocean's floor. She was in an underwater city when the Adversary managed to attack even there. Mersey managed to escape to the mundane world, where she was forced to live in a small lake at the Farm, where all the Fables who couldn't pass as humans were forced to dwell.[1]
The Farm
One day, a bored Mersey found herself lying on the banks[1] of the mermaid pond,[1] with Mister Sunflower and some of the playing cards observing her as she voiced her frustrations to Reynard the Fox about her lack of freedom to leave. She questioned him about the possibility of her going anywhere, and Reynard responded by confirming that the rules state that she cannot.[1]
Mersey is also pictured on a map of the Farm in the Fables: Wolves trade paperback.
Mersey later assists Owl and Pussy Cat with going on a little boat trip. They arrive at the mermaids' pond, where their old pea-green boat is waiting for them — Owl has taken it out of storage. With a sailor cap perched atop its head, a cheerful Mersey directs the joyful couple to embark on the boat. As the petite vessel glides over the pond's surface, Mersey entertains them by singing the beloved children's song "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."[2]

Trivia
According to the Fables Encyclopedia, any similarity between her and the title of the song "Mairzy Doats" is likely coincidental.[3]
