History

Background

General Blug has been at war with with the Nome King,[3] the Emperor of the Pan Ozian Empire,[4] since back when the latter was "just another king."[3] The general commands an army of fifty thousand Nome troops,[1] and is known to harbor disdain for the Nome king.[2]

Robbing the bunker

Revolutionaries who can't remember secrets, can't spill secrets.

Bufkin establishes a resistance movement in the Pan Ozian Empire, with the aim of overthrowing the wicked Nome King.[5] Upon arriving at a heavily guarded bunker brimming with magic items, Bufkin proposes tunneling underneath and entering the bunker from below, but Jack Pumpkinhead and Sawhorse point out the futility of this plan due to the Nomes' control over the underworld. Bungle suggests seeking out General Blug, the one Nome who harbors more animosity towards the Nome King than they do.[2]

The rebels find General Blug and attempt to convince him and his fifty thousand nome troops to join their cause. Although Blug acknowledges his disdain for the Nome king, he is confident that he can resolve his issues with him eventually, and he would rather not perform the digging for the revolutionaries. Jack Pumpkinhead assumes the role of elucidating to the General the significance of extensive excavation, underscoring that only genuine Nomes possess the expertise to carry out this endeavor inconspicuously, without alerting the Nome King.[1]

They are ultimately successful in swaying the general to their cause, and Blug's presence on the team enable them to dig into the bunker from below and steal all the enchanted weapons. General Blug takes charge of the newfound casks of Oblivion Water, stating that revolutionaries who cannot remember secrets, cannot reveal any.[6]

Betrayal

Unfortunately, Bufkin is discovered and apprehended by the Air Force.[1] Lily Martagon reveals that Bufkin is about to face execution, and demands that they mount an immediate plan to rescue him. However, Blug immediately vetoes the suggestion, stating that their struggle is bigger than the fate of any one member, and they are not ready to strike yet. Bufkin will have to fend for himself, knowing that "his noble sacrifice" will serve the greater good. They will honor him as a great martyr to their cause. When Lily reacts in anger, Blug becomes furious, saying that this is a war, not a romance, and declares himself the new leader of the revolutionaries.[3]

This causes Blug's fellow revolutionaries to turn against him, and the Nome is tied down, with two of his own soldiers consistently force-feeding him to keep him bloated, sleepy and listless, so that he cannot escape through the rock and inform the empire about them.[7]
