Bad Sam drunkenly greets Mowgli, Fables #78 — "The Jungle Book, Part Two of Five"

Bad Sam is a Fable kinkajou who resides at the Farm in upstate New York. He first appears in Fables #78 — "The Jungle Book, Part Two of Five." Sam is the companion of Lord Mountbatten, and came with him to the Farm.

History

Background

Bad Sam is a kinkajous from "some exotic land." His kind is known to have a particular taste for a fermented fruit, giving them the nickname of "the alcoholics of the rain forest."[1]

Resistance fighter

Sam was eventually taken from his homeland and brought as a gift to the late Viceroy of The Indu,[1] the Homelands version of India.

After the Adversary invaded the Indu, the clockwork tiger Lord Mountbatten took it upon himself to assume the office of Viceroy and lead the local resistance. All the troops eventually deserted, except for Bad Sam. By the time they met Mowgli, the two had been fighting together for hundreds of years, while Sam had kept Mountbatten repaired, and rewound him when needed.[1]

Meeting Mowgli

Mowgli meets Mountbatten and Sam in the jungle while on a mission in The Indu. The clockwork tiger introduces himself as Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of the Raj, and presents Sam as his last loyal Sepoy. Sam offers a polite greeting to Mowgli, although he is significantly intoxicated and can only articulate his words in a slurred manner.[2]

Mowgli allies himself with them[3] and brings Sam and Mountbatten with him[4] to the Farm.[3]

Wolf family reunion

Subsequently, Bad Sam undertakes the responsibility of crafting physical forms for the zephyr Ghost Wolf, ensuring that he does not remain perpetually invisible. Sam ultimately constructs a dozen bodies for Ghost. One thousand years following the fall of Fabletown, Sam reappears at the Wolf family reunion, conversing with Ghost, who is wearing one of the bodies, specifically the one he utilizes in social settings.[5]

Personality and traits

Lord Mountbatten describes Bad Sam as someone who is "not at all a bad fellow."[2] Much like the others of his kind, Sam loves to drink.[1]

Powers and abilities

Skilled mechanic: Lord Mountbatten describes Bad Sam as extremely good at keeping him repaired, a "natural savant."[1]
